The cover of the booklet folds open to reveal a map of South Africa's water source areas. Each water source area is colour coded and numbered, and corresponds to a different page in the booklet.
Each double page spread in the booklet covers a different water source area: its size, which areas it supplies with water, threats and recommendations for better managing it.
We used data visualisation to supply key bits of information in an engaging way.

Graphic design and project management:
Design for development
The Centre for Environmental Rights approached us to design a booklet about South Africa’s water source areas to use as an interactive tool in meetings with stakeholders and policy makers.
The aim is to demonstrate why it is important to protect the areas in our country which provides us with water – our Water Source Areas. It gives an overview of the current state of these fragile ecosystems: the size, location, areas it supplies with water, threats and recommendations for better managing it. South Africa is a water-scarce country with uneven distribution of rainfall. It is essential that we protect these water source areas in order to secure our water supply and quality.
We designed the cover to fold open to reveal a map of South Africa’s water source areas. Each water source area is colour coded and numbered, and corresponds to a different page in the booklet. The design relies on data visualisation to supply key bits of information in an engaging way.
Subsequently, WWF South Africa also used the same map for their Journey of Water campaign.
